THE SWEET SCENT OF BLOOD: Spellcrackers.com by Suzanne McLeod

Hot Embraces...

Author: Anya Bast
Publisher: Ellora's Cave Publishing
Behind an illusion of folklore, the Embraced create a barrier between the Dominion and humankind. Penelope Coddington, wealthy daughter of upper class England, was marked at birth to take her rightful place within the ranks of the fully Embraced Vampir.

Aidan O’Shea, a working class Irishman on the Coddington Estate, is also marked. Class difference has kept Aidan and Penelope apart, but soon that will change. The  Vampir will realize their birthrights and they will both belong to the same noble, blood-drenched line.

And that’s good, because unless these two can come together, it’s going to be hell on Earth.
BLOOD OF THE ROSE is the first book in the Embraced series. Anya Bast comes out swinging with this first book. The plot was great.  The love story between Aidan and Penelope started when they were children but statutes separated them quickly. A series of events sees them both to America and in to the arms of Gabriel, the Embraced leader in New York . After being embraced they are thrown in to a world they never knew existed and a war between Vampir and Dominion. Together they are the only hope for the Embraced and all of humanity.

This book was HAWT! I enjoyed the love story between Aidan and Penelope as well as the battle between the Embraced and their enemy the Dominion. The love scenes while hawt were not so badly written that I felt the need to pass them by. In fact I think I went back and read them again. My only complaint about this book was I felt the editing should have been looked into a little better. A couple times I ran across a sentence that was missing a word or words that had letters in the wrong place.

Gabriel Letourneau, a four-hundred-year old vampire, has been guarding Fate Harding from the dark forces that swirl around her for a very long time. On the night Gabriel’s period of watching comes to an end, when he finally believes she’s safe, Fate is violently attacked, Embraced, and left on his doorstep.

Fate didn’t know she had a badass vampiric bodyguard until the night she became a vampire herself. She awakens from her ordeal with a powerful craving for both sex and blood, and Gabriel looks perfectly capable of satisfying all her needs at once.  With sexual desire hot enough to spark the whole city on fire, she turns to Gabriel to sate the lust of the recently Embraced and teach her the ways of her new life.

Fate awakens something within Gabriel that has been asleep for centuries. He is insatiable in every way when it comes to her, but taming and keeping fiery, headstrong Fate is another matter entirely. Especially since she has a history of being mistreated and betrayed by those she loves. Gabriel’s greatest challenge becomes earning Fate’s trust.

Even if Gabriel manages to convince Fate he’s the only man for her it may not be enough to keep her. Someone is stalking Fate, manipulating them both, and punishing Gabriel for his past sins…
Anya Bast delivers another great book with this second installment of the Embraced series, BLOOD OF THE RAVEN. In this book we follow Fate, a human artist who has the ability to dream walk. This ability allows her to enter the Dominion realm and kill them while she dreams. Knowing her share of heartache she is strong and determined never to be hurt again. Gabriel, a Vampire leader, is hell bent on protecting her, knowing she’s a target of the Dominion due to her ability. Gabriel feels Fate is safe and allows his attention to be diverted for a short time. Fate is then brutally attacked and forced to become Embraced and then left on Gabriel’s door step.  Together they try to find out who attacked her. Was she attacked due to her ability or will one of their past come back to bite them both?
I just love this series. Fate is a strong woman, a black belt, who takes no shit off anyone. She is independent and refuses to allow anyone or anything to run her life. Even being almost killed, forced to become a vampire and having to hide out because someone wants to harm her.  Gabriel is an old vampire who, while watching fate for years, begins to have feelings for Fate that he hasn’t felt for many years. Their story is a steamy one, especially when Gabriel decides he wants to give Fate every sexual fantacy she’s ever had. It’s really hot when Gabriel invites Niccolo, a friend he had know for centuries, to share their bed for the night.  Gabriel ends up fighting two battles, one to keep fate safe and one to keep Fate with him forever.  I felt this was a great book all around. Great story and great Characters.

Tiya is turning the tables on the Embraced. She wants their blood. With a desire for vengeance…and lots of weapons…she’s searching for the rogue Vampir who killed her family. One night she meets her match in Charlie, a visiting vamp in the territory where she’s hunting.

Charlie tracks down the woman he knows isn’t human because she’s too fast and way too strong. Soon he becomes obsessed with her and her plight. All he wants is Tiya naked and beneath him on a bed. He wants to possess her in every way. Her blood sings to his and he soon finds out why. Tiya is OtherKin Sidhe …a real, live feary.

Tiya discovers that Charlie has enough sexual heat to melt away the cold knot of revenge within her. He’s a well-bred, well-mannered vamp, but once she gets him stripped, his civilized composure turns into erotic single-minded passion that rocks her to her core. Charlie makes her feel alive again.
But Tiya’s feelings of being alive may not last. Someone in this territory hungers for the special blood of the OtherKin Sidhe …and her family’s blood in particular.

Anya Bast continues her story in this 3rd book of the Embraced series, BLOOD OF AN ANGEL.  This book introduces Tiya, an OtherKin Sidhe…a fairy. She’s a woman hell bent on getting revenge for her family’s murder. Charlie has lost two women that he loved and fled from Gabriel’s territory to get away from all his memorys. Anya put these two together for a wonderful story of love, lust, betrayal and vengeance.

This story touched me. I couldn’t help but put myself in both Tiya and Charlie’s shoes, both having been hurt by love lost..it’s hard to want to be open to love again even when the lust is overwhelming.  This book brought so much for me love, betrayal, the need for revenge, all of which I can relate to. The action was sweet while the romance was smoking hot.

On My Wishlist...

"On My Wishlist" is a weekly meme hosted by Book Chick City to share the books that we haven't bought yet but are waiting to be bought and devoured. Below are some of the books that I am looking forward to reading!

Demon hunter Maxine Kiss wears her armor as tattoos, which unwind from her body to take on forms of their own at night. They stand between her and her enemies, just as Maxine stands between humanity and the demons breaking out from behind the prison veils. It is a life lacking in love, reveling in death, until one moment—and one man—changes everything.
Demon hunter Maxine Kiss, inked with living tattoos, is on a mission to rescue the man she loves from a bloodthirsty army. To save him, Maxine has only one choice: to lose control-and release her own powers of darkness.

Demons, Shifters, Zombies... Oh My!

Author:  Nancy Holzner

Publisher: ACE

4 1/2 Stars

They call it Deadtown: the city’s quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders — but Victory Vaughn, Boston’s only professional demon slayer, isn’t exactly human…

Vicky’s demanding job keeping the city safe from all manner of monsters is one reason her relationship with workaholic lawyer (and werewolf) Alexander Kane is in constant limbo. Throw in a foolhardy zombie apprentice, a mysterious demon-plagued client, and a suspicious research facility that’s taken an unwelcome interest in her family, and Vicky’s love life has as much of a pulse as Deadtown’s citizens.

But now Vicky’s got bigger things to worry about. The Hellion who murdered her father ten years ago has somehow broken through Boston’s magical protections. The Hellion is a ruthless force of destruction with a personal grudge against Vicky, and she’s the only one who can stop the demon before it destroys the city and everyone in it.

Victory Vaughn lives in the heart of Deadtown, the area where all paranormal beings must reside.  She works as a professional demon slayer, spending her nights hunting the creatures that are out to terrorize her clients.  As a Cerddorion, a shifter able to take the shape of any living animal, she has trained her entire life to fight demons and is ready for revenge when the one who killed her father comes to town summoned by someone bent on destroying the city she calls home.  She finds herself in a new position as she agrees to become a bodyguard for a client in hopes of having a chance to kill the creature that still brings her nightmares.

Vicky's semi-boyfriend, when their conflicting schedules allow, is Alexander Kane, a lawyer out to fight for the rights of PAs, Paranormal Americans.  He has made it his life's work and as a werewolf he has a vested interest in making his dreams of equal rights a reality.  Unfortunately when it comes to choosing between Vicky and his goals the path isn't always that clear.  After finding out that Vicky has agreed to work for one of the very people supporting the other side of his war on rights he doesn't even try to understand her side of the situation.

With the help of Daniel, a police detective, and Tina who is a frisky teenage Zombie, Vicky fights a war to keep the unknowing citizens of Boston safe.  With so much going on and a boyfriend that is too busy Vicky finds herself turning to Daniel to help her through.

I absolutely loved DEADTOWN!  Nancy Holzner has created an interesting world with amazing characters that grabs you and sucks you in.  This book brings action, laughs and real issues together with a unique flair that you can't help but enjoy.  The plot was filled with twists and turns and tons of information but it never slowed down as I became engrossed in this refreshingly new take on Urban Fantasy.  I cannot wait to read more in this series!  The next installment was recently titled HELLFORGED and is scheduled to be released in January.

Bite Worthy Read...

Author:  Chloe Neill

Publisher: NAL Trade

4.5 Stars

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker—and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan “Lord o’ the Manor” Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude— and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war—and there will be blood.

When I first started this book I didn’t know what to expect, but once I started it the book was hard to put down. The main character Merit gets turned into a vampire against her will only to save her life. Her sassy attitude of dealing with it made me laugh throughout the book. I feel that her attitude is about how any 27 year old woman would handle being turned into a vampire. Luckily for Merit she has a best friend Mallory to help her throughout the transition. There is also Ethan, the vampire who turned her and the Master of the house that she is to join trying to help her, but her resentment towards him for turning her doesn’t leave the two of them with much trust. Then there is the rogue vampire that tried to kill Merit that still needs to be caught.

I really enjoyed this book, and can’t wait to get to the next one in the series. I feel the author did a good job at developing the characters to the point that you can feel their emotions and understand why they act the way they do. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys urban fantasies that include vampires, shifters, and other mystical creatures. I would give this book 4.5 stars out of 5.

~ Crystal ~

A Couple of Great Quotes...
~ Mallory leaned toward me. "FYI, your eyes are silver.  I'll just add 'horny' to the list of reasons that happens."

~ "Jesus" Mallory whispered.  "I want to support your quest for revenge and all, but maybe you should just let him glamour you".  She looked at me, and I could tell she was trying not to laugh.  "Either you're f****d, or you're f****d, right?"

Q & A With Laura Stamps Plus A Giveaway!!!!

Title:  A Vampire’s Kiss: Book One of the Manigault Vampires

Author:  Laura Stamps

Publisher:  Kittyfeather Press

We start out by meeting Sara and Dray who are introduced at a party to celebrate Samhain. Sara is a Wiccan Green Witch who is in town visiting her friend, Maylene, and is introduced to Dray who is dressed as Dracula. She is instantly attracted to this handsome stranger dressed as one of her favorite things: vampires.

Dray, the owner of Manigault Technologies, finds himself trying to hold back his laughter while spending time with Sara. He finds it truly refreshing to find someone who speaks their mind at all times. At the end of the night he asks her to meet up with him the next day and Sara loves what she finds as things begin to heat up between them.

A VAMPIRE’S KISS is the first in the The Manigault Vampires serial series by Laura Stamps and has promises of steamy hotness to come! Even though there are characters that are brought in from The Witchery Series, which I have yet to read, I didn’t feel lost which was great. The story line so far kept my attention and the ending left me wanting more. I must say that I can’t wait to read the next part!

Q & A With Laura:

1.) Can you briefly describe The Manigault Vampires Series and The Witchery Series in your own words for those who have not read them?

The Witchery Series trilogy is my primary series, and all my other series are spin-offs from this main series. The Witchery Series is a sexy paranormal romance novel series where you'll meet five wonderful Witches: Savannah, Maylene, Mirabella, Noelle, and Ravena. There's something for everyone in this trilogy set in Columbia, South Carolina. The novels range from empowering to romantic to erotic. You'll also find real spells, chants, and rituals in each one, because I’m also a Wiccan Faery Witch.

The Manigault Vampires is my first serial erotica novel series in ebook. Yeah, I'm really excited about this series! In this spin-off series, you'll meet Drayton Manigault, the owner of Manigault Technologies and one of the richest businessmen in Columbia, South Carolina. Dray also happens to be one of the oldest vampires in the city. All of the Witches in The Witchery Series novels return in this series for lots of erotic, vampy fun with Dray, Val (Dray's older brother), and Atwell Gibbs (their cousin). Did I mention how gorgeous these vamps are? Oh, yeah, they're smokin' HOT in and out of the bedroom. Trust me! *lusty grin*

2.) Since you have characters from another series that will be in this one do you feel that readers would get more out of your serial series if they read them as well?

Yes and no. You don’t need to read The Witchery Series first in order to enjoy A Vampire’s Kiss, the first novel in The Manigault Vampires series. Even though my novels are part of my various series, I make sure they all have a HEA, and you get a good feel for the characters from other series so you don’t feel lost. However, A Vampire’s Kiss starts at Noelle’s Samhain party, which is at the end of Call of the Witches: Book Three of the Witchery Series. So I would encourage people as they are reading A Vampire’s Kiss every month to go back and read The Witchery Series just because you’ll learn even more about the characters you love.

3.) What are you currently working on?

Right now I am working on The Manigault Vampires series. All of my spin-off series are trilogies except this one. I would love for it to run for 10 novels or more. I’m also working on the spin-off series for Donnie and Savannah from What Witches Want: Book Two of the Witchery Series. They are such a hot, sweet couple, so I’ve decided to give them their own ebook spin-off series. Savannah is a Wiccan Faery Witch like me, so I’m calling it The Faery Witch Series. Noelle and Wynn from The Witchery Series also have their own ebook spin-off series called The Rune Witch Series. It should be coming out this year from Magicomm Media. If not, then Kittyfeather Press will publish it.

4.) What inspired you to start writing?

I started out as an artist and sold my paintings and prints worldwide until I was 30. But I never felt completely satisfied creatively. My teachers in high school and college always told me I had writing talent. But I’m mildly dyslexic, and it was very difficult for me. Back then they didn’t have computers, so I didn’t pursue writing. One day I picked up a Writer’s Digest magazine at the bookstore. I read an article about writing poetry. It inspired me so much I wrote a poem about one of my cats, and …eureka!…I was creatively satisfied for the first time in my life. *lol* I always tell people that day marked the end of my art career. So I dug up my old college grammar books and taught myself how to write, mostly by reading all the writers I enjoyed and studying how they crafted a novel. That was 23 years ago. Since then my short stories and poems have appeared in over 1000 magazines, literary journals, and anthologies worldwide. In 2005 one of my books was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and I have received 7 Pushcart Award nominations. My resume of writing credits and awards is over 80 pages long. Now you know why I’m always encouraging women to follow their dreams. Find out what you wanna do, and then find a way to do it. Don’t wait for anyone to give you permission or encouragement. Just follow your heart and DO IT!

5.)Who are some of your favorite authors?

Emma Holly, Kathy Love, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Delilah Devlin, Sunny, Charlene Teglia, Jaci Burton.

6.) Are there any new authors that have caught your attention?

Hannah Murray, Lacy Danes, Anne Rainey, Jayne Rylon

7.) What is one of you favorite books?

Oh, that’s easy. Demon’s Fire by Emma Holly. It’s in her Demon Series. I was so in love with Prince Pahndir I knew I wanted my vampire, Dray, in A Vampire’s Kiss to have the long, silky black waist-length hair Holly gives her sexy royal demons, the Yama. That is the only similarity between the two, but it’s enough. If you know me, you know I’m CRAZY about men with long hair. Yummy! In fact, you’ll laugh at this. In 2008 I was doing a booksigning at Waldenbooks in the mall, and one of my fans had driven down from Spartanburg to come to this booksigning. We were talking, and all the sudden a gorgeous guy with silky black hair all the way down to his waist walked into the bookstore. Jen and I looked at each other and screamed, “YAMA!” It was a hoot. But then I’m infamous for ogling all the good-looking guys when I do a booksigning because most of mine are in malls. Hey, even a working girl’s gotta have her eye candy, ya know?

8.) What upcoming new release are you most looking forward to?

I can’t wait for The Rune Witch Series to come out. Finally! It was supposed to come out last Spring from Forbidden Publications. But they went out of business in March right before that series was to be released. So now a year later I am anxiously awaiting its publication. Finally! Wynn and Noelle are such a hot, kinky couple. My readers are just gonna love this series.

9.) Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Don’t think you need an MFA to get published and make a good living as a writer. It’s only been since the 1950s that we’ve had Creative Writing programs and degrees for this in colleges. Before that, the great writers studied the greats who came before them. So if you wanna write, do it. Write every day, practice your craft, and never give up. Persistence is everything in this business. No kidding.

10.) Do you have anything specific you would like to say to your readers?

What?…besides GET HOOKED ON MY BOOKS!! *lol* Sorry (well, not really). I couldn’t help myself. My readers know I have a very hard time taking anything in life too seriously. In fact they know my two goals in life are to have as much fun and sex as I possibly can. So far that’s working out reallllly well for me, and I’ll be 53 in April (horrors!…there must be some mistake, right?!). Still, life should be FUN. I’ve always run my career the same way. The minute something stops being fun I tweak it to make it fun again. In fact I just did that last week with this serialized novel series. I thought it would be cool to treat my loyal readers to hot vampire erotica every month. I mean, what could be better, ya know? The issues are short, like 15-20 pages, so even if you don’t have an e-reader they’re a piece of cake to read on computer or print out. Cool, huh? People are always gonna tell you what you can’t do. Ignore them. If you think you can do it, then you will find a way. And if you keep at it you’ll make a success of it. Hey, it’s always worked for me.

Thank you so much Laura for answering my questions! I really enjoyed part one and can't wait to see what happens next!

On My Wishlist...

"On My Wishlist" is a weekly meme hosted by Book Chick City to share the books that we haven't bought yet but are waiting to be bought and devoured. Below are some of the books that I am looking forward to reading!

Shelly Laurenston's Pride Series
I've been wanting to get to these for a while now...

One of the hottest new voices in paranormal romance, Shelly Laurenston knows how to do it all, delivering tales that are wickedly funny, action-packed, and scorch-your-fingers sexy. With THE MANE EVENT, she proves just how delicious love can be once you unleash your inner beast…

Some things are so worth waiting for. Like the moment when Jessica Ward "accidentally" bumps into Bobby Ray Smith and shows him just how far she's come since high school. Back then, Jess's gangly limbs and bruised heart turn to jelly any time Smitty's "all the better to ravish you with" body came near her. So, some things haven't changed. Except now Jess is a success on her own terms. And she can enjoy a romp-or twenty-with a big, bad wolf and walk away. Easy.

The sexy, polished CEO who hires Smitty's security firm might be a million miles from the loveable geek he knew, but her kiss, her touch, is every bit as hot as he imagined. Jess was never the kind to ask for help, and she doesn't want it now, not even with someone targeting her Pack. But Smitty's not going to turn tail and run. Not before proving that their sheet-scorching animal lust is only the start of something even wilder…

Weddings have the strangest effect on people. How else to explain the fact that Sissy Mae Smith woke up in Mitch Shaw's bed the morning after her brother Bobby Ray tied the knot? Or that gunmen are trying to kill Mitch, and Sissy Mae now has to escort a bleeding, stubborn, yet still incredibly sexy lion shifter to her Tennessee Pack's turf to keep him safe? It doesn't help that Mitch's appraising gaze makes her feel like the most desirable creature on earth, or that the ultimate stray cat is suddenly acting all kinds of possessive...

Mitch is an undercover cop who's about to testify against some dangerous ex-associates. Even more worrisome, he's harboring hot, X-rated fantasies about the fast-talking little canine-and he has to deal with every male in Sissy Mae's Pack sniffing around her in a way that makes his hackles rise.. Mitch has his pride, and he intends to show Sissy Mae that when a lion sets out to make you his mate, the only thing to do is purr, roll over, and enjoy one hell of a ride...

Growing up on the tough Philly streets, Gwen O'Neill has learned how to fend for herself. But what is she supposed to do with a nice, suburban Jersey boy in the form of a massive Grizzly shifter? Especially one with a rather unhealthy fetish for honey, moose, and…uh…well, her. Yet despite his menacing ursine growl and four-inch claws, Gwen finds Lachlan "Lock" MacRyrie cute and really sweet. He actually watches out for her, protects her, and unlike the rest of her out-of-control family manages not to morbidly embarrass her. Too bad cats don't believe in forever.

At nearly seven feet tall, Lock is used to people responding to him in two ways: screaming and running away. Gwen-half lioness, half tigress, all kick-ass-does neither. She's sexy beyond belief and smart as hell, but she's a born protector. Watching out for the family and friends closest to her but missing the fact that she's being stalked by a murderous enemy who doesn't like hybrids…and absolutely hates Gwen. Lock probably shouldn't get involved, but he will. Why? Because this is Gwen-and no matter what the hissing, roaring, drape destroying feline says about not being ready to settle down, Lock knows he can't simply walk away. Not when she's come to mean absolutely everything to him.

Ten years after Blayne Thorpe first encountered Bo Novikov, she still can't get the smooth-talking shifter out of her head. Now he's shadowing her in New York-all seven-plus feet of him-determined to protect her from stalkers who want to use her in shifter dogfights. Even if he has to drag her off to an isolated Maine town where the only neighbors are other bears almost as crazy as he is...

Let sleeping dogs lie. Bo knows it's good advice, but he can't leave Blayne be. Blame it on her sweet sexiness -- or his hunch that there's more to this little wolfdog than meets the eye. Blayne has depths he hasn't yet begun to fathom -- much as he'd like to. She may insist Bo's nothing but a pain in her delectable behind, but polar bears have patience in spades. Soon she'll realize how good they can be together. And when she does, animal instinct tells him it'll be worth the wait...

Our first give away in honor of reaching 50 followers!!!!!!

TITLE:  Fire & Ice

AUTHOR:  Laura Hamilton

At work Nina is known as the Ice Queen, as her frosty demeanor makes her colleagues think she's equally cold in bed. But what they don't know is that she spends her free time acting out sleazy scenarios with her boyfriend, Andrew, in which she's a prostitute and he's a punter. But when Andrew starts inviting his less-than-respectable friends to join in their games, things begin to get strange and Nina finds herself being drawn deeper into London's seedy underworld, where everything is for sale and nothing is what it seems.

When Nina decides to make a change she goes all out. Her co-workers call her the Ice Queen because she never dates and doesn’t allow anyone too close. Having spent most of the last few years sealed off from everyone around her she takes a huge step when she decides to reacquaint herself with the dating world. Coming to the end of an audit, she finds herself dating her client Andrew and taking the plunge to explore her sexuality.

Andrew finds that Nina is more fire than ice as they begin by discussing all of the fantasies she has never let herself act on. He decides to take matters into his own hands and bring some of her most erotic musings to life. At times pushing her to a point almost past what she can handle.

Although Nina is beginning to love this new found sexual freedom, she finds herself wondering if what Andrew is giving her is what she truly needs.Turning to her best friend Angie and her co-worker Max she begins to seek the answers she is looking for. But Max has reservations about Andrew beginning with his audit and ending with Nina. Max isn’t the only one, his friend George is a cop and working on a lead that has Andrew and his godfather Costas right at the top of his list. Dark secrets and betrayals are revealed as they continue their search for answers and Nina discovers what she truly desires.

The plot line for FIRE & ICE by Laura Hamilton was good. I loved the ending and felt that it really brought the whole book to a great close. I did feel that there could have been more emotion involved as it felt almost cold at times but really enjoyed the characters. Definitely not for the faint at heart as there are extreme instances of sexual dominance and voyeurism.

On My Wishlist

"On My Wishlist" is a weekly meme hosted by Book Chick City to share the books that we haven't bought yet but are waiting to be bought and devoured. Below are some of the books that I am looking forward to reading!

Goodreads Description

Being a mechanic is hard work. Mercy Thompson, for instance, just spent the last couple of months trying to evade the murderous queen of the local vampire seethe, and now the leader of the werewolf pack - who's maybe-more-than-just-a-friend - has asked for her help. A book of fae secrets has come to light and they're all about to find out how implacable - and dangerous - the fae can be. OK, so maybe her troubles have nothing to do with the job. But she sure could use a holiday ...

Goodreads Description

When Kayla Steel's fiancĂ©, Karrel Dante, is found mauled to death, she thinks it is the end of her world. But when Karrel shockingly returns from the dead, Kayla is stunned to find out that everything she knew about the man she loved was a lie. Part of an underground network of supernatural hit-men, Karrel had secretly dedicated his life to exterminating the dangerous supernatural entities that stalked the streets of California. Now Kayla is on a mission to learn the Dark Arts so she can avenge Karrel¿s death and bring peace to the supernatural community by continuing his work. Not easy for a girl trying to hold down a job at the perfume counter to pay her mounting bills...

Title:  Spell of the Highlander
Author:  Karen Marie Moning
Publisher:  Dell
ISBN: 0440240972

4 Stars

Powerful. Sensual. Seductive. He is all that is shamelessly erotic in a man. In her sexiest Highlander novel yet, New York Times bestselling author Karen Moning stirs up a sizzling brew of ancient mystery and modern passion as she brings together a devilishly handsome Celtic warrior trapped in time . . . and the woman who’s about to pay the ultimate price for freeing him. Age-old secrets haunt them. Deadly danger and irresistible desire shadow their every move. It’s a relationship for the ages. And all that separates them is a mere thirteen hundred years. . . .

Karen Marie Moning may be better known for her Fever series, but her rich and occasionally rather purple, prose has been catering to romance readers’ long before Mac and Barrons came into the spotlight. She was responsible for a good seven and half books of pure Highlander deliciousness, a series that ended with a bang, or should I say, multiple bangs.. Well a heck of a lot of banging, as featured in the last novel of the lot, Spell of the Highlander.

Now I generally suck at synopses, (what do you know, I got that word well spelled in the first try), so forgive me for merely relaying the gist. And what is it comprised of? Brainiac heroine, Jessica St. James, assistant to a university professor and virgin de rigueur, whose life is forever altered after reluctantly accepting a mysterious crate in said professor’s name. And what does the crate contain, pray tell? Nothing but a man-sized looking glass with whole lotta ensorcelled Highlander inside. Why the hell do I only get junk mail and fast food coupons?

Needless to say, things get dangerous real quickly, as the baddie of the book, the powerful sorcerer responsible for Cian MacKeltar’s sordid entrapment in the mirror wants him desperately back. His immortality is at stake if he doesn’t get his hands back on his most prized possession and he’s got a little over twenty days to do so. Of course he’s willing to kill everyone and everything in sight to do so, including poor unfortunate Jessi.

Well, unfortunate might not be the best descriptor after all, not when Jessi decides to aid Cian in his struggle to get free from his enemy. The greedy arse mofo has kept him imprisoned within the glass for over 1000 years. Yes, Jessi’s life is in jeopardy, but Cian agrees to protect her in return, and boy is he one formidable protector. He’s sexy, he’s huge (oh yeah… aren’t they all), he’s from the ninth century and his speech is peppered with the doonas and cannas any Highlander worth his salt is supposed to use. His ways may be slightly (or very) archaic, he might occasionally treat Jessi in a me-tarzan-you-jane way (and this is actually a line in the book) but who cares. Cian Mackeltar stays true to the tradition of the blindingly sensual MacKeltar men Moning already introduced us to in Kiss of the Highlander and The Dark Highlander, Books 4 and 5 respectively. True fans will be delighted to know Drustan and Dageus and their oh so lucky wives actually make an appearance in this installment.

Spell of the Highlander contains a heaping dose of all those things Karen Marie Moning enthusiast appreciate about her, an undercurrent of humor, and a larger than life alpha hero that scorches the pages with his kilted self, a slightly whiny but ultimately compelling heroine and an intricate, well thought out plot. The stakes are high in this last installment, and the battle between good and evil achieves apocalyptic proportions. And I just have to add, no one does sexual tension like this author, or at least very few excel the way she does. This may not be my favorite book in the series, as that title belongs to Kiss of the Highlander, but it’s a solid four out of five read for me. Why did it loose a point? Perhaps because it just didn’t affect me emotionally the same way as the aforementioned book, or Immortal Highlander (Adam Black’s book) did. Nevertheless, there’s still a rich, thick decadent serving of romance and action in this one. Yes, Jessi and Cian’s inability to keep their hands off each other and their constant humping like energizer bunnies on any surface they could find was just a tad over the top, but hey, give me Cian and I might just turn into a Jessi myself. Like with any of Moning’s Highlander books, it’s made to enjoy, not to analyze. And it’s quite a light, enjoyable page turner in fact.
